Intro to Tactical Medicine

About This Course:

You can win the fight but still not survive it. Injuries sustained by you or a bystander can claim a life after the violence ends.  This course will help prepare you to prevent that from happening.  You will learn the basics of first response to gunshot wounds and other traumatic injuries in the context of the gunfight.   You will also learn what medical equipment is necessary and how to assemble your own medical kit.   You will learn how the concept of “airway, breathing, circulation” can and will have devastating results if applied to a combat injury. You will fully understand why pinpoint accuracy with a handgun may not stop an aggressor. You will not only learn what to do if you or someone you are with is seriously injured, but where, why, and how to attack an opponent to inflict the desired trauma.  Don’t be confused into thinking this is a typical first aid or EMT class.

Tops Covered:

Ballistic Data and Wound Details –  Learn what the real data shows concerning ballistics.  Understand what gun shot wounds are catastrophic versus those which are survivable.

Assessment and Treatment of Trauma Patients –  Learn how to apply the concepts of TC3 in the individual, reactive setting. How do you respond to an attack? What medical care do you provide, and when do you do it?

Hemorrhage Control – Do you know when to apply a tourniquet? Do you know the best ones on the market? How to improvise one?  Do you know how to properly use hemostatic agents and pressure dressings?

Airway Management – How do you ensure an open airway on an injured person? How is the standard “ABC” wrong for trauma? What is an NPA?

Medical Kit – Do you have a medical kit?  What components do you carry in your car, versus what you keep in your house?  What do you carry with you at all times?  We will cover the best way to assemble kits for all budgets.

Target Audience:

This course is applicable to civilians, law enforcement officers, as well as medical first responders.  Anyone who might find themselves, a loved one, or a fellow citizen the victim of trauma will benefit from this course.  While the topics are geared toward violent encounters with blades and firearms, the techniques are equally suited for routine accidents in the home, workplace, of in a vehicle.

Course Scope:

This is an introduction course with primarily information given and minor application of skills.  Participants should wear clothes they are comfortable in to lay on the ground.
