Introduction to K9 Handling

About This Course:

This class is for beginning handlers who are interested in becoming a part of a search and rescue (SAR) K9 team, or for dog lovers who just want to know more about their capabilities. 

Having a dog is not required for this class, but those who bring their future partners will be introduced to a testing process to determine if they are up to the task, and which area they would likely be best suited.

  • Different “jobs” for the SAR K9

  • Reinforcement Methods
  • Scent Imprinting
  • Alert Methods
  • Testing the Dog’s Capabilities
  • Equipment Requirements for Proper Training and Deployment

Equipment Needed:

  • Notetaking Material For All Participants
  • For Those Who Bring Their Dog:
    • Their Dog
    • A Kennel, Cage, Crate (we do have some available if needed).  Alternatively you can leave them in your vehicle until it is their turn to train.
    • 6 Foot Sturdy Leash and Collar
    • Water Bowl
    • Their Favorite Treats
    • Their Favorite Toy

Note:

This course will include classroom and practical exercises with the dogs.  If you do not have a dog you will be shown ways to assist handlers in the field and during training.

Prerequisites:

All dogs who attend must be current on all vaccinations and have been recently treated for fleas
